Location Summary

Positive Findings:
 Compared to the national average, the San Bernardino-Riverside area had fewer homes with open cracks or holes in walls, broken plaster or peeling paint, signs of mice, water leaks from outside, water supply stoppages, incomplete plumbing, room heaters without a flue, and a lack of adequate kitchen facilities. Homes inside the central city had fewer open cracks or holes in the walls and floors, broken plaster or peeling paint, signs of mice, water leaks, flush toilet and heating equipment failures, foundation problems, and a lack of kitchen facilities. Outside the San Bernardino-Riverside central city, homes were less likely to have evidence of mice, water leaks from the outside, and water supply stoppage. Rental units fared well against the national average, having fewer incidences of broken plaster or peeling paint, signs of mice, water leaks from the outside, flush toilet breakdowns, rooms without a working electrical outlet, window and foundation problems, and missing kitchen facilities. Compared to the national average, owner-occupied housing in the San Bernardino-Riverside area was less likely to have mice, water supply stoppages, heating equipment breakdowns, and room heaters without a flue.

Areas for Improvement: Compared to the national average, dwellings in the San Bernardino-Riverside area had more signs of rats, exposed wiring, and roofing and window problems. Units in the central city were more likely to have rats, while outlying homes were more likely to have holes in the floors, evidence of rats, water leaks from inside, exposed wiring, and problems with roofing siding, and windows. Owner-occupied dwellings were more likely to have holes in the floors, signs of rats, exposed wiring, rooms without a working electrical outlet, and roofing and window problems.

Community Information: The Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) is comprised of Riverside and San Bernardino counties in California. In 2011, the MSA included 1,300,333 occupied dwelling units, 21.1% of which were located in the central cities of San Bernardino and Riverside. The housing stock of the Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario MSA ranked among the youngest and most heavily rentals of the cities surveyed. The percentage of pre-1940 homes ranked 7th-youngest (3.2%) for the MSA and 9th-youngest (6.3%) for the central city. The median house age in the San Bernardino-Riverside MSA was 1985. The percentage of rental units ranked 29th (37.2%) for the MSA and 22nd (49.4%) for the central city. Compared to other locations, San Bernardino-Riverside had a higher poverty rate, ranking 32nd (15.2%) for the entire MSA and 22md (18.9%) for the homes in the central city.
