Positive Findings: Compared to the national average, the San Antonio area had fewer homes with exposed wiring and heating equipment breakdown. Homes in the central city were less likely to have signs of mice and incomplete kitchens. Compared to the national average, fewer rental properties in the San Antonio area lacked kitchen facilities or had heating equipment breakdowns.
Areas for Improvement: Compared to the national average, San Antonio-area homes were more likely to have open cracks or holes in walls and floors, broken plaster or peeling paint, signs of rats, water leaks from the inside, water supply stoppages, flush toilet and sewage disposal breakdowns, room heaters without flues, and siding, roofing, window, and foundation problems. Additionally, rental units also had more water leaks from the outside and owner-occupied dwellings were more likely to lack adequate kitchen facilities. Homes outside fared similarly to the San Antonio MSA figures but did not have a high frequency of water leaks and flush toilet or sewage disposal breakdowns.
Community Information: The San Antonio MSA is comprised of Bexar, Comal, Guadalupe, and Wilson counties, Texas. In 2004, the MSA included 586,900 occupied dwelling units, 68.9% of which were located in the central city of San Antonio. The housing stock of the MSA ranked among the youngest and least-heavily rental of the cities surveyed. The percentage of post-1940 homes ranked 13th-youngest (5.7%) for the MSA and 8th-youngest (6.4%) for the central city. The median house age in the San Antonio MSA was 1976. The percentage of rental units ranked 12th-least heavily rental (23.0%) for the MSA and 7th-least heavily rental (40.4%) for the central city. Compared to other locations, San Antonio had a higher poverty rate. Its poverty rate ranked 36th (16.4%) for the entire MSA and 20th (18.6%) for homes in the central city.
