Central city dwellings were less likely to have mice, water leaks from inside, and roofing and foundation problems. Rental units were less likely to have mice, water leaks from inside and outside, water supply stoppage, room heaters without a flue, and foundation problems. Owner-occupied homes had fewer incidences of mice, water leaks from outside, water supply stoppage, incomplete plumbing, and rooms without a working electrical outlet.
Areas for Improvement: Compared to the national average, Oakland-area homes had more problems with signs of rats, heating equipment failure, and a lack of kitchen facilities. Central city dwellings were more likely to lack kitchen facilities and have problems with rats; homes outside the central city also had higher-than-normal occurrences of heating equipment failure. Owner-occupied homes in the Oakland area were more likely to lack kitchen facilities or show evidence of rats than the national averages.
Community Information: The Oakland MSA is comprised of Alameda and Contra Costa counties, California. In 2011, the MSA included 907,391 occupied dwelling units, 23.4% of which were located in the central city of Oakland. The housing stock of the MSA ranked among the oldest and most heavily rental of the cities surveyed. The percentage of pre-1940 homes ranked 30th (15.0%) for the MSA and 25th (32.8%) for the central city. The median house age in the Oakland MSA was 1968. The percentage of rental units ranked 7th-most heavily rental (42.5%) for the MSA and 11th-most heavily rental (55.7%) for the central city. Compared to other locations, the Oakland MSA had an average rate of poverty. Its poverty rate ranked 13th (11.4%) for the entire MSA and 14th (16.6%) for homes in the central city.
