Location Summary

Positive Findings: The Anaheim/Santa Ana area had fewer homes with open cracks in the walls, broken plaster, water leaks from the outside, room heaters without a flue, exposed wiring in the unit, rooms without a working electrical outlet, and roofing, siding, and window problems. Compared to the national average, central city dwellings were less likely to have severe physical problems, open cracks or holes in the walls, signs of mice, water leaks from the outside, window problems, or a lack of complete plumbing. Areas outside the central city had fewer open cracks or holes in the walls, signs of mice, water leaks from the outside, exposed wires in units, room heaters without a flue, incidences of flush toilet breakdown, rooms without a working outlet, and roofing, siding, or window problems. Rental properties were less likely to have open cracks or holes in the walls, evidence of rats or mice, water leaks from the outside, flush toilet breakdown, heating equipment breakdown, exposed wiring, or rooms without a working electrical outlet. Compared to the national average, owner-occupied homes were less likely to have open cracks or holes in walls, broken plaster or peeling paint, signs of mice, water leaks from the outside, breakdowns of heating equipment, and roofing, siding, or window problems.

Areas for Improvement: Compared to the national average, homes in the Anaheim/Santa Ana area were more likely to have problems with mice, incomplete plumbing and kitchen facilities, and water supply stoppage. Owner-occupied dwellings were more likely to have signs of rats. Rental properties had higher incidences of incomplete plumbing or kitchen facilities. Homes outside the central city were more likely to have rats, water leaks from inside, and incomplete plumbing and kitchen facilities, when compared to homes nationally.

Community Information: The Anaheim/Santa Ana MSA is comprised of Orange County, California. In 2011, the MSA included 983,009 occupied dwelling units, 19.7% of which were located in the central cities of Anaheim and Santa Ana. The housing stock of the MSA ranked among the newest and most heavily rental of the cities surveyed. The percentage of pre-1940 homes ranked 3rd-youngest (1.7%) for the MSA and 2nd-youngest (3.2%) for the central city. The median house age in the Anaheim/Santa Ana MSA was 1974. The percentage of rental units ranked 9th-most heavily rental (42.3%) for the MSA and 22nd-most heavily rental (49.9%) for the central city. The Anaheim/Santa Ana area had a lower poverty rate than other locations. The poverty rate of the Anaheim/Santa Ana area ranked 15th (11.5%) for the entire MSA and 17th (18.2%) for homes in the central city.
