Last week, the National Center for Healthy Housing (NCHH), with guidance from the Codes and Standards Workgroup of the National Safe and Healthy Housing Coalition, submitted five proposals to improve the 2016 editions of the International Code Council's (ICC) International Property Maintenance Code (IPMC) and International Existing Building Code (IEBC). The five proposals cover four topics: carbon monoxide alarms; lead-safe certification confirmation; integrated pest management; and health standards for radon, asbestos, and lead.
“If the proposals make it through the ICC review process and into the code, state and local communities can adopt them, making homes healthier through better maintenance and safer remodeling codes,” said Tom Neltner, senior advisor on regulatory affairs for NCHH.
NCHH’s proposals, as well as those submitted by others, will be posted to the ICC website at www.iccsafe.org by March 13, 2015. In April, ICC Committees will convene in Memphis, Tennessee to consider the proposals and vote on their acceptance, rejection, or modification. The full body will consider public comments and make final decisions on any code revisions in the fall.
